ABSTRACT

The art of children with learning difficulties indicates a similar pattern of development to that of their mainstream peers; however, the actual ages at which changes occur may vary considerably. The art elements are used in combination in different forms of art making. A professional artist may spend weeks, months, years maybe, over one piece of work. Making art takes effort - a creative form of expression that conveys the artist's intention as accurately as possible. Pupils of all abilities need to learn how they may record experiences in art, based on first-hand observation and analysis of features in the environment. Pupils need to develop the capacity to reflect on their work and make changes, taking on board or rejecting the comments of others, describing, criticising and expressing opinions. Teachers will need to make it possible for physically impaired children to make creative decisions based on their level of understanding of how the art elements may be used.
