Moving from descriptions of Russell Simmons’s television show, the DEF Comedy Jam, to the author’s viewing experiences, to quotes from bell hooks, the essay shows how race is implicated. Extensive quotes from bell hooks serve as correctives throughout. In this confessional account, the author reveals his problematic behavior.
