ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the supporting bodies that have guided the forensic community to make that transition seamlessly and successfully, the rules of evidence that dictate workflows, and how we are able to ensure and maintain the integrity of images used for investigation, analysis, and court. When an image is processed for image analysis, the result must be a whole new file identified as a processed version of the original, and the integrity of the new file must also be protected. As a forensic community, we approached the transition from analog film to digital imaging cautiously, and rightly so; we are all aware that digital images can be easily and almost seamlessly edited and manipulated. Scientific Working Group on Imaging Technology was formed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1997. The Organization of Scientific Area Committees aim is to identify and promote technically sound, consensus-based, fit-for-purpose documentary standards that are based on sound scientific principles.
