ABSTRACT

Shelford's report on the proposed railway to Tarquah in the Western Districts of the Gold Coast, and of a letter which we addressed to him on the 11th instant, calling his attention to certain points connected with this report, upon which it appeared to us that additional information was required. Gentlemen, Acting upon Shelford's letter of the 31st December last, and his subsequent instructions, the author advised reader on the 5th of January that he had engaged the services of two engineers to make a reconnaissance survey from the coast at Takoradi Bay to the gold mining district at Tarqua. This exceptional rate will only apply at the outset, for when the traffic requires four trains per day, which will carry 53,332 ton per annum, the working expenses and capital charges will be covered by an average rate of 4d per ton per mile.
