ABSTRACT

The prices of permanent-way material are those at present quoted in England, and are exceptionally low, and unless the work is proceeded with at once, there must be some addition allowed to this item. Throughout the whole of the country which the author has inspected, there is a great scarcity of a permanent supply of water, and allowed an extra of £100 per mile, in the estimate, on this account. The estimates are calculated to cover work and material of every description required to complete and equip the railway, including the first cost of rolling-stock. The line will then pass over perfectly easy country, with light work, and no gradient steeper than 1 in 70, and only a short length of that, to Rhenoster Kop Farm.
