ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the construction of railway in Zoutpansberg district, and railway extension in the High Veld of the Zoutpansberg District. It also details the railway construction for the development of the low veld area of the Zoutpansberg District, including Leydsdorp and Murchison Range Districts. The urgent need for railway communication in the low veld of the Zoutpansberg District, including the Leydsdorp and Murchison Range Districts, has been recognised for many years, and the diminished revenue from claim licences and other sources derived by the Government of late, as compared with what was formerly received, is due to the languishing hopes of railway communication being provided. But while the railway communication has for long been regarded as vital to the needs of the district, there has been considerable diversity of view as to the direction railway communication should take.
