ABSTRACT

Tanganyika Territory (formerly German East Africa) is larger than any other British Dependency without Dominion status. It was an active theatre of war up to the Armistice, and suffered very great material damage by destruction of buildings, bridges, rolling stock, and harbour works. There was, of course, a complete cessation of trade, and the attitude of the native inhabitants was doubtful. It was necessary to institute an administration in all its branches, repair the ravages of war, and give the natives a better government than they had under the Germans; all this at a time when neither men nor money were easily obtainable. This chapter provides a report on reconnaissance of the District of Tabora — Northern Portion of Tabora Sub-district and Shinyanga Sub-district.
