ABSTRACT

Owing to the fact that the Southern Rhodesian portion forms an integral part of the whole, and to the fact that the other portions have in return an important bearing on Southern Rhodesia, it has been necessary to view the railway system as a whole. A feature of the system is that in its location it bears signs of having been built to suit the needs of the moment, and with little regard to traffic en route. The control of the whole system, with the exception of the Blinkwater Railway and the Rhodesia-Katanga Junction Railway and Mining Company, is in the hands of the British South Africa Company. The control of virtually the whole system by the British South Africa Company has simplified the question of management. The Rhodesian system is long and scattered; though its headquarters are placed centrally, the distance to either end, where most of the traffic originates, is at least two days by the fastest train.
