ABSTRACT

The British Possessions are widely scattered, east, west and south, while Belgium is interested solely in the Congo, Portugal with Angola and Mozambique, and Spain with relatively small areas. France, however, virtually monopolises the whole of Northern Africa, and the greater part of West and Equatorial Africa, Italy controlling Libya, Eritrea and a slice of Somaliland. The re-location of lines and the improvement of operating conditions by means of regrading and the flattening of curves go hand in hand with the employment of stronger track materials, more powerful locomotives and high-capacity rolling-stock. Train control is making rapid progress on several systems, while recent investigations have led to the more or less general adoption of a ‘transportation’ scheme of organisation on most lines. Under British administration the Sudan is developing rapidly, largely due to the means of communication afforded by the railways and steamers, and a considerable traffic has been created.
