ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors demonstrate the use of differing therapeutic models in single-session therapy with their client, Ivana. Ivana had been diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma of her right eye, a progressive condition that causes increased eye pressure and subsequent optic nerve damage, potentially leading to blindness. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has managed to find an important role within the Single-Session Walk-In (SSWI) program at South Calgary Health Centre. Clients are deemed suitable for the SSWI service by virtue of their presence; there is no age limit or geographical catchment area. The client was introduced to the CBT model that was illustrated on a whiteboard, highlighting the connection between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical sensations. Solution-focused brief therapy lends itself quite naturally to the single-session format in that it focuses on the present and future, targeting the desired outcome of therapy, a future in which the problem is absent or less influential.
