ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author offers a road map for supervision with single-session therapists. Supervision is a crucial component of a therapist's journey from initial training through seasoned practice. At its best, supervision conversations invite clinicians to reflect on practice, promote skill development, and foster positive outcomes for clients. There are two main categories of supervisory activities. Administrative supervision involves review and discussion of productivity benchmarks and documentation. Clinical supervision "is a working alliance and ongoing process between practitioners intended to enhance knowledge, skills and judgment; provide professional support and clinical development and improve client/patient outcomes". Like the client–therapist relationship, supervision is influenced by the context in which it occurs and the multiple roles of the supervisor and therapist. The author provides an in-depth discussion of group supervision. Therapist engagement begins with recruitment. This stage must focus on the scope of practice for the single-session therapist.
