ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a veritable cornucopia of information about the theory and practice, development and implementation, training and supervision, and utility and cost-effectiveness of walk-in and by-appointment single-session/one-at-a-time therapies with diverse populations. It summarizes evidence demonstrating that the largest gains happen in the earliest sessions of therapy and that walk-in visits are consistently rated by clients as being very helpful, and goes on to make the case that WI/SST is an efficient and desirable way of delivering mental-health services. The book then presents contact data that provided community health counselors with a compelling rationale for embracing a single-session approach. It also reviews evaluation data that the Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) organization accumulated on 352 SST clients across Ontario, Canada, and reports consistently positive results on a variety of outcome measures.
