ABSTRACT

Walk-in counseling represents a paradigm shift and challenges long-held assumptions about how best to provide effective counseling services. This chapter provides university community collaboration between KW Counselling Services, researchers from Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and the opportunities for advocacy that may support the expansion of emergent walk-in counseling globally. The consultant conducts a screening interview and determines either a funding subsidy or a fee based on income. Research conducted at KW Counselling Services includes both an initial pilot study and a second study using mixed methods. Research and design and the iterative process are generally recognized as the cost of advancement. Yet, this level of design has rarely been supported in the counseling field, where "matters of the heart" such as emotions, mental health, relationships, family functioning and parenting affect millions of people.
