ABSTRACT

While there is obviously no one theme to The Bible (except, perhaps, the history of the House of Israel), in that it is a story extending over thousands of years, the subject of happiness occurs repeatedly in it. From the beginning, God is depicted as a being who is pre-eminently concerned about the moral side of things. Why were heaven, earth, light, land, plants, stars, sun, moon, amphibious creatures, creatures of the air, creatures of the land, and, finally, man and woman created? No reason is given, except that it was good, "And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1:31, King James Version).
