ABSTRACT

This chapter contains report on transport policy to develop the Northern Provinces of Northern Nigeria. The principal objects of the tour were to ascertain the sections of the Niger navigable for steam-propelled vessels of any size, as compared with canoes controlled by paddles or poles. The general scheme recommended divides itself into two stages. Firstly, the construction with the least possible delay of a 3 foot 6 inches line on the Baro-Kano Railway standard from Jebba, or near Jebba, to Sekachi, on the left bank of the Niger. The second part of the scheme recommended is the eventual extension of the railway to Sokoto, via Jega.
