ABSTRACT

This chapter contains reports on inspections made to ascertain the best lines of possible extensions of the Western and Midland Systems in Capetown. The reports were presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of His Excellency the Governor in JUNE, 1879. Inspections were made in 8 routes. Enclosures containing the details of the estimated distance, slidings, cost and equipment for all of these routes are presented. The prices of labour and of transport, on which the estimates are based, are about the average of those prevailing on the Beaufort West Extension Railway in course of construction. The estimates are calculated to cover work and material of every description required to complete and equip the railway, including the first cost of rolling-stock.
