ABSTRACT

All clinicians working in the field of sex and porn addiction need to be aware of both online and offline sex offending behaviours that may present. This chapter looks at the most common types of offending, including viewing of explicit images of individuals under the age of 18, often referred to as CSA (child sexual abuse) and extreme pornography, as well as exhibitionism and voyeurism, much of which is now undertaken using smart phone and internet technology. Readers are encouraged to acknowledge that it’s essential for them to be aware of the legal implications of different kinds of offending, and that clients, some of whom may not know they have committed an offence, are also made aware. Confidentiality and contracting is also discussed here and the importance of appropriate referral when required. Risk assessment is also explored as well as guidance on how to build a positive therapeutic relationship that can reduce shame and support recovery.
