ABSTRACT

107In this chapter we begin to use the C.H.O.I.C.E. recovery model, an integrative model that focuses on establishing full recovery, not reluctant abstinence. Starting with ‘C’ – Challenge Core Beliefs, we look at how many addictions develop and flourish from faulty thinking patterns and negative core beliefs. Readers have the opportunity to explore the core beliefs that leave them trapped in thinking they either don’t need to change their behaviour or can’t. At the root of ‘don’t need to change’ thinking is denial and until denial is confronted and resolved, recovery is not possible. At the root of ‘can’t change’ is shame – a soul destroying feeling that you’re defective, unworthy and beyond help. The role of shame and how it both causes and maintains addiction is considered at length, along with practical strategies for overcoming it. The therapeutic principles of CBT, ACT and motivational interviewing are used to help readers consider how faulty core beliefs can be identified, challenged and overcome.
