ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduces the ‘broaden-and-build theory’ about the impact of positive emotions and experiences. Positive emotions can be seen as very important ‘vitamins’ of a healthy mind. Modern science demonstrates that positive emotions broaden our attention span, open us up, make us more creative, supportive and forgiving. In the long run positive emotions help us to build up mental, physical, and social resources. We start to make better choices and come up with more effective solutions. We develop more confidence in our own abilities. We reinforce friendships and relationships as a result of our becoming more attentive to the needs of others. And they improve our ability to bounce back and even grow from difficult experiences. Developing skills in savouring and gratitude are a relatively easy way to enhance positive emotions in our daily lives.
