ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 introduces the themes of connectedness, giving and spirituality. Research shows that selflessly serving others and acts of kindness are perhaps the biggest sources of joy and of personal well-being. Self-realization by itself leads to the experience of belonging to a greater whole and of feeling part of the unity of all life. Spirituality can be defined as the creation of a connection to the awe-inspiring power of nature, the cosmos, and existence, living according to self-transcending values and subservience. Three basic activities are shared by all religions and spiritual traditions, namely: connecting, reflecting, and serving. These can be considered core skills required for spiritual development. For many people experiences of connecting, reflecting and serving are vital sources of joy and meaning.
