ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 introduces the ‘self-determination theory’. Self-determination is one of the most influential theories in positive psychology. Self-determination means acting based on psychological freedom instead of coercion. This theory states that people have three basic needs, and that meeting these needs is important to a person’s performance and growth. These needs are: experiencing competence, autonomy, and connectedness. One powerful way to become more self-determinant is to become more aware of one’s strengths. Strengths are skills and qualities we use in everyday life, and which give us a sense of joy and energy to apply. The exercises in Chapter 2 are aimed at making us better strengths-spotters.
