ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 introduces various theories of optimism. One theory stresses the role of interpretation. Optimistic people have a tendency to ascribe negative events to temporary and external circumstances and positive events to their personal strengths and accomplishments. Another theory defines optimism as the general expectation that the future will hold more positive and desired outcomes than negative or unwanted ones. People with a generally positive outlook more often think they will be able to reach their goals, and will persevere in their efforts longer than people with a more negative outlook. The good news is that both forms of optimism can be developed and several exercises are introduced to train one’s optimism.
