ABSTRACT

Natural hazards (weather, geologic, and ecological) are natural processes that can potentially threaten people, places, and property. This chapter provides a brief summary of weather-related hazards and the wide array of datasets that facilitate vulnerability assessments instrumental to disaster management, adaptation planning, and, increasingly, population relocation planning. The chapter also discusses participatory mapping and public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS) that allow citizens to merge indigenous knowledge with available science and technology.
