ABSTRACT
This chapter takes a close look at the structure of words, examining the individual parts that make up words, and how these parts combine to form words. It is a brief overview of morphology. The reader is shown how words can be made up of meaningful chunks called morphemes, how linguists categorize these morphemes, and how morphemes combine. The reader learns about inflectional and derivational affixes across many of the parts of speech. The chapter also examines how the structure of words has changed over time by comparing verb paradigms from Old English to Modern English.
