ABSTRACT

Lameness is the behavioural manifestation of pain or dysfunction of the locomotor system. Lameness is caused by a range of diseases affecting different parts of the locomotor system and as such is multifactorial and diverse in presentation. This condition includes musculoskeletal disorders of the limbs and trunk; neurological disorders such as nerve paralysis; and injuries and infections of the integument, including the hooves (claws) and digital skin. With so many different anatomical structures being affected with a variety of pathological processes, accurately diagnosing and recording the cause of lameness is challenging, and yet arguably essential to optimise prevention and control.
