ABSTRACT

Organic crop production in the United States is increasing due to strong demand for organic food and an attractive income potential for organic farmers (Johnson, 2004). An example is the growing demand for organically grown corn (Zea mays L.): there was a 300% increase in the production of organic corn (in hectares) from 1995 to 2005 in the United States, as the total organic corn production grew from 13 212 to 52 881 ha (AgMRC, 2009). Corn was the second largest organic grain/seed crop after organic wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), which was grown on nearly 112 550 ha in 2005 (AgMRC, 2009). Organic crops can be used for human consumption or livestock feed.
