ABSTRACT
The breeding and selection of disease-resistant sugarcane varieties with high cane yield and high commercially extractable sucrose content has underpinned the development of profitable sugar industries worldwide. In most countries, development and identification of better new varieties remain among the highest priorities for research investment by industry stakeholders. Generally, farmers in most countries eagerly obtain new varieties to test on their farms and rapidly adopt those which are more profitable to them.
