ABSTRACT

In the final chapter, as a typical phenomenon of the third phase of open architecture, I discuss the people’s action which has become possible for the first time because of the richness of spatial resources in today’s Japan. It is “play” using vacant buildings.

Chapter 6 starts with the detailed introduction of an example of the “play”, namely more than ten years-lasting fine art activities in a vacant wooden factory building at a declining small city. Another suggestive example introduced in this chapter is “DIY Eco-Renovation,” which is a kind of improvement workshop of an old house and executed by non-expert participants who gather for fun as well as learning. After the introduction of such examples the positive meaning of “play” is finally discussed.

Also in Chapter 6, several similar activities in other Asian countries are introduced including two cases from Shanghai and several cases from cities in Taiwan such as Taichung and Chiayi.
