ABSTRACT

Something I often say to my students is that an ounce of approximation is worth more than tons of calculation. Because in truth, all scientific equations are approximations. In fact Edwin Hubble (of the Hubble Space Telescope) has been known to say, “The scientist explains the world by successive approximations” (Figure 17). Edwin Hubble and the 48-inch (1.2-m) telescope later dedicated as the Samuel Oschin Telescope.
