ABSTRACT

By the time I was in grade school I already had a well-established reputation as a bad student. I was from the lower middle class and no teacher had ever shown any faith in my intellectual abilities. I had some natural ability as an athlete so I threw my energies into soccer and basketball and was seen as something of a dumb jock. Nevertheless, on a whim in tenth-grade algebra class, I decided to try my hand at solving a couple of the assigned homework problems. I did my best but wasn’t sure my solutions were correct. The teacher, upon seeing that two of my solutions were indeed correct, immediately made me feel that I had copied from someone! She was patently accusing me of cheating.
