ABSTRACT

Chapter 14, “Extending the field to therapy with toddlers and parents”, deals with mother–toddler therapy work that has been built on the author’s therapy experiences with infants and mothers. He argues that involving mother and toddler, respectively, in direct interpretations during joint therapy hours can be decisive for the outcome. During such sessions, his attention switches to and fro between mother and child. Interpretations concern the mother’s unconscious views of her child’s disordered behaviour as well as the child’s fantasies fueling his impulsive behavior, temper tantrums, etc. The author also compares his mode with several other authors’ works. This chapter ends the clinical section.
