ABSTRACT

It is based on his observation that he often comes up with spontaneous images and metaphors in sessions. They help him understand better the present unconscious dilemmas of the baby and the parent. Once voiced, they can be used to further the mother’s understanding of the undercurrents of her and the baby’s distress. The vignettes are detailed and thus provide another example of how this therapist is working with babies and parents. The theoretical discussion also accounts for various views on the place of metaphor in psychotherapeutic practice.
