ABSTRACT

In 2017, the sixth iteration of the course, the tumblers fell into place as Public Sociology fit within the capstone model. The course used the same four-part model and had the students working in groups of three, drawing on their previous learning in research methods. Twenty-five students enrolled in the Public Sociology course and worked on nine projects using methodologies and final output mediums. Two projects, Riding for the Disabled and the foetal alcohol spectrum disorder support group, followed on as research sites from the previous year, but with new topics. It was interesting that the organisation Rape Crisis that had been researched so successfully for the three previous years was not chosen as a research site by the students. Teamwork will always be an unknown variable as part of this non-classroom-based structure. In 2017, there was still a need to add some scaffolding to fulfil the capstone prescription that the students' final report be publically presented.
