ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses everyday fan practices in Zagreb, with a focus on fan practices, organization, everyday practical logics, and symbolic aspects. It begins with an introduction to Zagreb, through a neighbourhood in which there was an active Bad Blue Boys fan group. Following this, discussions relating fandom to class positioning are examined, and especially the difficulties in applying cultural theory developed in a UK context to post-socialist, post-war environments such as the Balkans. The various dimensions of group participation in Zagreb fan groups are then analysed, namely: enrolment, meetings, symbols, fan habitus, place and identification, terrace activities, myth-making, relationships with other groups, surveillance and links to the punk and skinhead scenes.
