ABSTRACT

Taiwanese indie bands are getting noticed for their actively crossing international borders and performing in various Asian and Western countries. Hundreds of indie bands and musicians have performed, produced, and distributed their original music works. This chapter analyzes the modes through which Taiwanese indie music has embraced the transnational music markets and will describe the dynamic context in which the East Asian indie-music network gradually emerged. The main reason is that currently there are no professional promoters or agencies in the global music industry/network that understand both the market and the characteristics of pop music from Taiwan. An undeniable characteristic of popular music from Taiwan is its unique overseas markets which cater to the populations of the People’s Republic of China as well as other ethnic Chinese around the world. Mayday has demonstrated a keen awareness of the situation and carried out smart game plans toward tapping the global Mandopop market.
