ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the research project, outlines the framework for relating the management of technology to the performance of the firm and summarizes some of the case-study results. Several main themes emerge from these case studies, and are developed in a theoretical framework. The book explores the view that most of the significant innovations introduced into the United Kingdom by the small-firm sector were concentrated in a few industries, including electronic data-processing equipment; electrical and electronic components; measuring, checking and precision instruments; medical and surgical equipment, and plastic products. It argues that the formulation and implementation of technology strategy are critically important influences on the pattern of technological innovation, and indeed on the competitive advantage of firms. The book examines the differences in the way different companies employ professional scientists and engineers.
