ABSTRACT

Speaking allows one's expertise to help more people and through them help more students. Conferences, TED Talks, media interviews, podcasts are the venues through which one can talk about his work. Priming is an aspect of behavioral economics, which is essentially how our brains strive to make decisions efficiently. Priming involves exposing people to something to trigger specific thoughts and attitudes. Some people like to write out all speaking notes in a single document before tackling slides. In a seminal study at the University of Minnesota, Nichols and Stevens found the average person remembered only 50% of what she heard immediately after hearing it, regardless of how vigilantly she listened, and this retention dropped to as low as 33% within eight hours and to 25% after two months passed. In the movie The Guilt Trip, Seth Rogan presents a cleaning solution to an audience of buyers in a way one might expect: sharing facts and listing the solution's attributes.
