ABSTRACT

Developing a good research question is key to developing a strong research project. This chapter offers graduate students some specific ways to create a meaningful and generative research question: beginning by identifying personal interests and then learning about specific tools and strategies designed to generate and narrow their question. Students are led through a series of approaches: reading for background knowledge, keeping a reading log, conducting preliminary observations and informal interviews, and phrasing their question. Throughout the chapter, students are offered prompts and exemplars from other students to aid in the development of a question.
