Foote’s play, first performed on 29 June 1772, featured many popularly-held prejudices against returned Company servants. In the following extract, the Mayor of the borough of Bribe ‘em has arrived at the house of Sir Matthew Mite, the Nabob, to negotiate terms for the borough’s seats.
