ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an rationale for a viable alternative to the transmission mode of teaching that unfortunately remains the prevailing model of teaching in many academic settings, and one where communication flows from the expert teacher to the receiving, passive student. Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. Compounding the challenge is the reality that nursing is not playing a big enough role in the resolution of inequities. A common metaphor used to explain transformation is a chrysalis turning into a butterfly. Transformative education is grounded in critical social theory and the belief that social inequalities are human constructions and they can be addressed and resolved. Transformational educators facilitate effective dialogue through ensuring everyone has a chance to contribute; students learn to suspend their assumptions and see each other as equal team members, and students learn to really listen and communicate with intent.
