ABSTRACT
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council, established in 1992, holds a crucial role in the accreditation of nursing and midwifery education programmes. State processes for training and accreditation continued until the 1960s. The national shift from hospital-based training to the higher education sector began in 1984 when the federal government announced its support to transfer nurse training from hospital-based to colleges of advanced education. Australian nursing education is faced with similar challenges to other countries. Employers of older nurses and nursing education providers need to work together to ensure older nurses are able to work to their full scope of practice, have access to appropriate professional development and are supported to remain physically and mentally fit and healthy. Across the world, technological solutions to health and healthcare issues are being avidly pursued, and richly funded, by governments, businesses and private individuals.
