ABSTRACT

The construction industry needs to reduce the level of carbon emissions during the building process. The sustainable building or structure is one that satisfies environmental, ecological, social and economic concerns in a balanced way. Construction is working towards zero carbon solutions, sustainable procurement, local products and waste reduction. Sustainability is an important element of the delivery of buildings in social, environmental and economic terms because it can save money in the long term in the form of paybacks from less energy use and creation of a positive reputation with desirable clients. In the UK, Construction 2025 was issued as a joint government/industry initiative providing overarching targets for carbon emission reductions in building, recycling, procurement, design innovation, climate change mitigation and adaptation of existing building stock. Wolstenholme recognised the need to create business models that integrate the client with the construction process if sustainability is to be tackled effectively.
