ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the product and its definition, and considers the strategy and planning processes for delivering the product. It explains the roles of planning and control and its subsystems, and examines scope and change management. Project planning is the process of defining, quantifying, costing and timing project activities and defining project achievements, risks and standards; for example, a time or cost schedule, a cost plan, a risk strategy, a quality plan or a health and safety plan. The chapter identifies strategic risks and their allocation, and also considers techniques for time and cost control. The work breakdown structure relates to scope planning, and scope definition provides a sectional breakdown of functional tasks and controls. The chapter demonstrates time, cost and quality control systems, and aims to evaluate and improve information systems. The stage schedule provides a quarterly timeframe responding to new information and predicting its impact on activities.
