ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the design and value management process and the role of any professional in the management of the design stage of the project. It explains the design process and demonstrates the challenges of improving its efficiency, including prefabrication and standardization. Managing design is iterative, dynamic and developmental to create value effectively. There is a wider approach to stakeholders who should be integrated and managed fairly throughout both the project and operational stages. One of the key areas of design management is the interface between the design and construction stages. The chapter identifies client value and its incorporation into the briefing and design concept, and looks at the process of design change and scheduling. It examines the impact of information technologies on the integration of the project team, and looks at the advantages and pitfalls of building information modelling to design development and integration.
