ABSTRACT

The authors describe unique young adolescent developmental processes and the ways in which constant Internet access, social media, and electronic gaming may affect those processes and contribute to increased levels of stress, sleep difficulties, greater anxiety and depression, and technology addiction. The authors describe how some technological interventions disrupt adolescents’ general learning capabilities, including loses in comprehensive sensory awareness, lower reading comprehension, an inability to maintain continuous cognitive focus, and exposure to excessive and unnecessary stimulation during learning.
