ABSTRACT

A teacher with a conscience is conscious of pedagogical details and conscientious in ensuring that they are handled properly. Such a concern for detail is widely recognized as an element of first-rate scholarship, but should also be regarded as an element of first-rate teaching. While some may consider a discussion of mechanics to be petty, when these matters are neglected, students suffer the consequences. The initial step is to find out how the course is described in the department's curricular listing. The next step is to prepare a syllabus. This document is the student's guide to the course and should be presented at the first class meeting. With a syllabus completed, are the teacher's ready for the first class? A fundamental pedagogic obligation is being present at every meeting. Faculty members should also be available to students for consultations.
