ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the process for detaining and interrogating German experts was far from a simple one and was certainly more complicated and problematic than the exploitation of documents and equipment. The exploitation of German personnel by the victorious Allies is arguably the best-known element of the post-war exploitation programme, largely because of the controversy which it often created. German experts could be housed and then visited by experts from various government departments who had an interest in their particular area of expertise – staff from the Ministries of Aircraft Production and Supply. The experience of other German experts who were brought to Britain to be detained and questioned, therefore, rarely mirrored that of the Farm Hall group. The story of the British detention and interrogation of German experts reinforces many of the characteristics attributed to the exploitation programme more widely – persistence, ingenuity and adaptability.
