ABSTRACT

Personal involvement in sustainable development characterizes the sustainably competent professional. The case of a young social entrepreneur who initiates collaborative innovation opportunities to tackle environmental and social problems exemplifies this sustainable attitude. In collective imagination workshops that this young entrepreneur facilitates, participants learn how to advance sustainability efforts in their communities. In the second case study, the book’s principal author shares how he has passionately worked toward his own dreams and ideals in order to inspire others to do the same. Describing one’s wishes and openly expressing professional ideals are cornerstones of this competence. The final case study introduces personal consciousness and ethical standards as vital characteristics of a sustainable professional. Caught in an ethical dilemma, a sales manager is forced to weigh her values against the demands of her supervisor. The chapter concludes with an anecdote of an argument about the degree to which a person’s conscience should be regarded as the ultimate yardstick.
