ABSTRACT

The term “sustainability” has multiple definitions. In this chapter, the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainable development is analyzed to show that today’s decisions impact not only current but also future social, environmental, and economic issues. The authors mention several factors that contribute to world population increase and give reasons for limiting such growth. A summary of the Triple P model of balancing social, ecological, and economic sustainability to achieve sustainable development is presented. The conclusion of the chapter suggests that challenges to sustainable development can be regarded as opportunities for sustainably competent professionals.
