ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how examining markers of disadvantage from an intersectional perspective can provide valuable insights into the way young people from minority ethnic and also diverse backgrounds enact sport, physical activity (PA) and health. It provides a critical reflection on issues of social justice within sport and health and the PA of Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) young people. The chapter discusses the importance of intersectionality research in sport, PA and health pedagogy for social justice and will further contextualise the complex intersections and interplay of social issues and their influence in shaping agency towards sport and PA amongst young people with a BAME background. According to A. Beard, language in sport and Physical Education can shape agency and practice as it influences issues such as gender, race, social class, the politics and representation of sport through media and the economics of sport.
